About Rot Reader and How to Check It
The short answer. Rot Reader is a free speed reader that runs in your browser. It shows a document one word at a time so your eyes stop moving. Your files are opened on your own device and are never uploaded. You do not have to take our word for that, and this page shows you how to check.
What It Is
Rot Reader opens PDF, EPUB, Word, plain text, Markdown and HTML files. It flashes the words at the speed you pick and lets you step back by a word, a sentence or a page when you lose the thread. It also has a shelf of free public domain books. There is no price, no account and no email sign up.
What Happens to Your Files
- Your file is read by code running in your own browser.
- Your documents and your place in each one are kept in your browser's own storage on that device.
- Nothing you open is sent to us or to anyone else.
- When you pick a free book, our server fetches it from Project Gutenberg and hands it to your browser. That request names the book, nothing else.
What We Measure
The site counts page views with Google Analytics, so we know how many people visit. That count never includes the files you open or the words you read in them.
How to Check Us
- Watch the network. Open your browser's developer tools, pick the Network tab, then open a file in the reader. You will see no upload of your file.
- Go offline. Load the reader once, turn off your Wi-Fi, then open a file. It still works, because the reading happens on your device.
- Clear it yourself. Clearing your browser's site data for rotreads.com removes your library and reading places. There is no copy anywhere else to delete.
